Senator Omar Fernández of the National District announced that the August 2026 allocation of the Fondo Gadiel will be directed toward supporting patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in the Dominican Republic. In a video posted on his social media accounts, Fernández met with Leo Marrero of the Fundación Proyecto ELA RD. The two discussed the nature of ALS, a neurodegenerative disease that progressively destroys motor neurons and leads to loss of walking, speaking, swallowing and breathing abilities. They also highlighted the significant care needs that arise for patients’ families and the lack of a cure for the condition. “Behind every diagnosis there is a story, a family, and a struggle that deserves accompaniment,” Fernández said. He emphasized that raising public awareness and taking concrete actions are essential to better understand and support those living with ALS. The Fondo Gadiel is a social assistance program run by the Senate office of the National District. It has previously funded medical treatments, surgeries and specialized care for various social causes. Fernández’s decision to allocate the fund to ALS patients reflects the program’s ongoing commitment to addressing urgent health needs in the country.
