A chaotic confrontation erupted in Penal on Tuesday afternoon, leading to a police officer’s injury and triggering a dramatic manhunt for a suspect reportedly suffering from mental health issues. Responding to a call from Emergency Health Services, local law enforcement attempted to approach the individual at a Clarke Street bar to discuss his medical needs.
The situation quickly escalated when the man, becoming verbally aggressive, resisted the officers’ attempts to engage him. Things took a turn for the worst when the man violently resisted arrest, attacking an officer and causing visible injuries.
Despite several attempts to subdue him using tasers and approved restraint techniques, the man managed to break free and flee the scene. This sparked off a dramatic chase that spanned several streets in Penal, from Penal Rock Road to the S.S. Erin Main Road, ending near Don’s Pet Shop where the suspect disappeared into a dense forest.
An intensive search operation followed, but officers were unable to locate the suspect. Meanwhile, the injured officer received treatment at the Siparia District Health Facility. Authorities have identified the suspect and are relentlessly working towards his capture.
