Officer Detained After Accidental Fatal Shooting of Colleague at Kent House

A police officer is in custody following the fatal shooting of his colleague, Police Constable Jamal Charles, in the carpark of the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government at Kent House. The incident occurred on September 11th, 2025. Charles, who was assigned to the Ministry, was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound to his mouth after an explosion was heard at around 3:18 p.m. He was in the company of two other officers at the time, and initial reports suggest accidental discharge during a careless act. The bullet was not from Charles’ own weapon. Charles worked at Kent House, Maraval, outside the office of Minister Khadijah Ameen. The Port of Spain Division, the Region 1 Homicide Bureau of Investigations, and other specialist units are conducting the investigation.
