The Rwanda National Police (RNP) has conducted a training session in Nyanza District for various stakeholders on fire prevention and firefighting techniques. The initiative, which drew participants from across the Southern Province, aimed to equip attendees with the skills necessary to protect lives and property while fostering a culture of safety. During the training, CIP Janvier Nkusi, from the RNP Fire and Rescue Brigade, instructed participants on emergency response procedures, the proper use of firefighting equipment, and proactive measures to mitigate fire hazards. The session emphasized the importance of early detection and the correct handling of fire-extinguishing tools. CIP Hassan Kamanzi, the Rwanda National Police spokesperson for the Southern Province, urged the participants to disseminate the knowledge gained to their colleagues and communities. He further called upon the management of various institutions to ensure that their premises are equipped with adequate fire safety and suppression equipment. “We encourage those who have received this training to share their knowledge on how to prevent fires. We also urge institutions to verify that they have sufficient firefighting equipment on hand,” CIP Kamanzi stated. Participants expressed appreciation for the training, noting its practical value for both professional and domestic settings. Nyecumi Pheias, a DASSO leader in the Rwabicuma Sector, noted that the skills acquired would help in implementing preventive measures before incidents occur. Similarly, Clarisse Uwitonze, a volunteer in Nyanza District, highlighted the importance of learning how to manage specific risks, such as gas-related fires, and committed to sharing these safety practices with fellow citizens. The Vice Mayor of Nyanza District in charge of Social Affairs, Nadine Kayitsei, commended the police for the initiative. She emphasized that the training is a vital step in increasing the number of citizens capable of preventing fires and responding effectively to emergencies. The training program is part of a broader effort by the Rwanda National Police to enhance public awareness regarding fire safety, reduce the impact of fire-related accidents, and promote a proactive approach to disaster management across the country.
