Norway mourns King Harald as Haakon prepares to take the throne

**Norway Mourns the Death of King Harald V; Crown Prince Haakon Set to Ascend the Throne**

Oslo – Norway entered a period of national mourning following the death of King Harald V, the country’s longest‑serving monarch, who passed away at the age of 89. The king’s death, announced by the royal household, prompted an outpouring of condolences from leaders and citizens across Europe.

The late monarch’s reign, which began in 1991, was marked by a focus on social cohesion and Norway’s role in international diplomacy. In a statement released by the Royal Palace, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre described Harald V as “a unifying figure whose dedication to public service and humility will be remembered for generations.”

With the throne now vacant, Crown Prince Haakon will assume the role of king, as stipulated by the Norwegian constitution. The Crown Prince, who has served as Norway’s de facto head of state on numerous occasions, is expected to be formally proclaimed king in the coming weeks.

The royal family’s transition occurs amid renewed public scrutiny of Crown Princess Mette‑Marit. Media reports have highlighted alleged past connections between the Crown Princess and the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. Additionally, the Crown Princess’s son, Marius Borg Høiby, was convicted of rape in 2022. Both matters have been cited by commentators as factors influencing public discourse surrounding the monarchy.

Norwegian officials have emphasized that the focus remains on honoring King Harald V’s legacy while ensuring a smooth succession. The Royal Palace has announced that a period of official mourning will be observed, and a state funeral is being planned in accordance with royal protocol.

The forthcoming coronation of Crown Prince Haakon will mark a new chapter for the Norwegian monarchy, with expectations that the new king will continue the traditions of his predecessor while addressing contemporary challenges facing the institution.
