Nissan Motor Co. announced on Wednesday that it will invest 170 million pounds, approximately 4.05 trillion rupiah, into its manufacturing facility in Sunderland, England. The investment is designated for the production of the Nissan Kicks, a compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) featuring the company’s proprietary e-Power hybrid system.
According to the company, the initiative aims to strengthen its product lineup in the European market while supporting manufacturing jobs in the region. The vehicles produced at the Sunderland plant are intended for sale in the United Kingdom, as well as for export to other European markets and Turkey. This move marks the European debut for the Kicks model, which is currently manufactured in Japan, Mexico, and Brazil.
Jonathan Reynolds, the British Minister of State for Business, Innovation, Science, and Trade, welcomed the announcement, describing it as a significant endorsement of the United Kingdom’s manufacturing expertise and the future of the nation’s automotive industry.
The Kicks will be the 10th model produced at the Sunderland facility, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Nissan is also reportedly exploring options to utilize the plant’s capacity more effectively, including a potential partnership to produce passenger vehicles for the Chinese manufacturer Chery starting in the 2027 fiscal year.
