Nina Kennedy Leads Australia as Flagbearer at Commonwealth Games Opening

Australia’s athletes have arrived at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games opening ceremony, led by reigning Olympic and world champion pole vaulter Nina Kennedy as the country’s flagbearer. Kennedy headed Australia’s team of 255 athletes with another reigning gold medallist, para swimmer Tim Hodge, who carried the King’s Baton at the ceremony inside Glasgow’s Hydro arena. Australia had already kicked off its campaign on Thursday morning, with a victory for lawn bowlers Kelsey Cottrell and Dawn Hayman in their opener. Australia is tipped as favourite to head this year’s overall medal tally, with swimming events starting on July 24 and athletics on July 27. This edition of the Games is taking place in Glasgow after Victoria backtracked from its hosting commitments.
