Nikoli Blackman Wins T&T’s First Gold at CAC Games in 50m Freestyle

Trinidad and Tobago’s Nikoli Blackman made history by securing the nation’s first gold medal at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games. Blackman triumphed in the men’s 50m freestyle event, clocking a time of 21.98 seconds at the Juan Pablo Duarte Aquatic Center in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. His victory came despite having the slowest reaction time at the start, as he surged past Venezuelan Jorge Otaiza and Dominican Javier Nunez, who took silver and bronze, respectively.

In addition to Blackman’s gold, Trinidad and Tobago has celebrated success in cycling, with four bronze medals already in the bag. Cyclist Kwesi Browne added to the tally by winning bronze in the men’s sprint event. Browne outperformed Guadeloupe’s Matthias Sylvanise in their bronze medal contest, securing his place on the podium.

Meanwhile, in golf, Chris Richards Jr narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing in joint fifth place. Richards maintained consistent performance throughout the tournament, ending with a two under-par 286 score. The gold medal in golf was claimed by Guatemalan Jose Manuel Toledo Novales.

Trinidad and Tobago’s beach volleyball teams are also competing fiercely, both holding 1-2 records in their respective groups. The men’s team, consisting of Jahreef Miguel and Jerome Morrison, and the women’s team, featuring Malika Davidson and Apphia Glasgow, are fighting for a chance to advance to the quarterfinals.

Elsewhere, the women’s basketball team faced a setback with a loss to El Salvador, while the men’s hockey team delivered an impressive 5-1 victory over reigning champions Mexico. As the games continue, Trinidad and Tobago athletes remain determined to bring home more medals.
