Local Sports Roundup: Legionnaires Release Schedule, Henderson to Play for Medal

The Sarnia Legionnaires will begin their Greater Ontario Hockey League regular season on Thursday, September 17, against the Komoka Kings at Pat Stapleton Arena at 7 p.m. Their 50-game schedule will conclude on Saturday, March 6, with a game against the Strathroy Rockets.

The team will play four games against each of the 11 other Western Conference teams and six crossover games against Eastern Conference teams. The Legionnaires will host Fort Erie, St. Catharines, and Caledonia from the Eastern Conference, and visit Ayr, Waterloo, and Hamilton. Last season, the Legionnaires made history as the first GOHL team to go winless, finishing with a record of 0-50-0-0.

In other sports news, Sarnia’s Chase Capes was eliminated in the men’s 1,500-metre heats at the world under-20 track and field championships in Eugene, Oregon. Capes placed seventh in his heat with a time of 3:46.77, while Kenya’s David Kapaiko won the heat in 3:43.60. The top five runners from each of the three heats advanced to the final.

Sarnia’s Matthew Henderson will play for a medal with Team Canada at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup in Edmonton. Canada won its pool with a 3-0 record and will face Finland in the semifinals. Henderson, a Kingston Frontenacs defenceman, had no points in Canada’s wins over Sweden, Slovakia, and Switzerland in pool play.

The Ontario champion Sarnia Brigade has started the Baseball Canada 22U championship in Tecumseh with two losses. They lost to Manitoba’s Carillon Jr. Sultans 6-3 and to the Windsor Selects 10-9, despite leading 9-5 after four innings. The Brigade will face two Nova Scotia teams on Friday and then play the host Tecumseh Thunder on Saturday.

Finally, Sarnia’s Taya Willemsen will play for a medal with Team Ontario at the Canadian under-15 girls basketball championship in Sherbrooke, Quebec. Ontario will face British Columbia in the semifinals after winning their quarter-final game 112-40 over Nova Scotia. Willemsen had a team-high eight rebounds, six points, and three assists in the quarter-final win.
