National Party councilor Pablo Langone has formally requested that the Durazno Departmental Board address the lack of palliative care resources for low-income residents living in the department’s interior. The proposal follows a specific case in the town of Blanquillo, where a patient requiring palliative care has relied on the financial and logistical support of local neighbors to receive necessary attention.
Langone noted that while the local Casa del Adulto Mayor provides housing for some elderly residents, it is not equipped to handle patients requiring specialized palliative care. This creates a significant burden for families in remote areas who lack the financial means to secure professional medical support independently.
The councilor suggested that the Ministry of Public Health and the Ministry of Social Development evaluate potential solutions for these infrequent but critical cases. Rather than establishing permanent facilities in every small town, Langone proposed the implementation of a flexible mechanism, such as the temporary hiring of nursing staff, to provide care when specific needs arise.
Langone requested that his proposal be forwarded to the Ministry of Social Development and the department’s two representatives in the Chamber of Deputies to ensure the issue is brought to the attention of national authorities.
