The Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned a potential violation of the country’s airspace on Saturday following an explosion and the discovery of debris near the capital, Chisinau. The incident occurred on Friday in the village of Colonita.
Local police reported on social media that they discovered debris within a 100-meter radius of the explosion site. Ion Ceban, the mayor of Chisinau, stated that the sound of the explosion was audible in the vicinity of the capital and described the situation as concerning.
In an official statement, the Moldovan government characterized the incident as a serious consequence of the ongoing war in Ukraine. The ministry emphasized that any unauthorized entry into Moldovan airspace is unacceptable and constitutes a violation of the nation’s sovereignty. Additionally, the Moldovan border guard reported that several unidentified objects entered the country’s airspace in the southeast on Saturday morning, with one object reportedly crashing on Ukrainian territory.
Moldova has reported an increase in incidents involving drones. The Ministry of Defense in Chisinau noted two separate airspace violations within a 24-hour period earlier this week. Last week, a drone-related alert caused a departure delay for a flight carrying Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy from the Moldovan capital.
