A mother cat and her six kittens were safely rescued from underneath an Ontario Provincial Police vehicle on July 28. The rescue effort, which took place over a two-day period, required patience, persistence, and the use of sardines as bait.

With the assistance of two Pet Save representatives, the North Bay and District Humane Society, and a representative from PAWS (Animal Welfare Services), the mother cat and her kittens were eventually coaxed out from under the vehicle’s heat shield. The animals were then transported to the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, where they are receiving care.

According to a Pet Save representative, the rescue team initially thought there were only three kittens, but ultimately found six. The representative described the rescue effort, saying, “We could see the mother under the firewall. At 7 a.m. we set up the trap and put out some sardines to entice them to come out from underneath the vehicle.” The mother cat initially escaped the trap, but was caught after a second attempt.

The Ontario Provincial Police reported that all seven animals are in good health and are expected to be available for adoption in the coming months. A Pet Save representative noted that the organization often sees cases where university and college students adopt animals without getting them spayed or neutered, highlighting the importance of responsible pet ownership.
