New Plan for LNG Supply: Third FSRU by 2028, Land-Based Terminal by 2030

Bangladesh has announced a new strategy to bolster its energy security by expanding its liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure. The plan includes the commissioning of a third floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) and the construction of a land-based LNG terminal.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit outlined the roadmap during the 15th LNG Producer-Consumer Conference 2026, held at The Westin Tokyo in Japan. According to a press release from the Bangladesh Embassy in Tokyo, the government intends to deploy a new FSRU with a capacity of 600 million cubic feet per day (MMcfd) in Maheshkhali by 2028. This is to be followed by the completion of a land-based terminal in Matarbari by 2030, which is expected to have a capacity of 1,000 million cubic feet per day.

During his address at the conference, which focused on the theme of advancing LNG for future resilience and reliability, the State Minister emphasized the need to adapt to global market volatility and geopolitical shifts. He stated that energy security must prioritize reliability, supply diversification, affordability, and flexibility. The Minister noted that these infrastructure investments are necessary to meet the country’s rapidly increasing energy consumption driven by population growth.
