New Exhibition Traces Origins of Jean P. Haydon Museum

The American Samoa Council on Arts, Culture and Humanities has unveiled a special exhibition titled ‘America 250,’ focusing on the territory’s journey with the United States. The display also shines a light on the beginnings of the Jean P. Haydon Museum, tracing its evolution from a small collection in the Governor’s mansion to the cultural landmark it is today.

The story began in 1969 when gifts presented to Governor John Haydon and First Lady Jean were first showcased on the first floor of the Governor’s mansion. The exhibit opened to the public for tours on January 7, 1970, marking the initial step toward establishing a formal museum.

In 1971, the Fono officially recognized the collection as the ‘Museum of American Samoa.’ Two years later, with local funding and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the museum moved to the old naval commissary building, where it remains today. The official opening ceremony took place on Flag Day, April 17, 1973.

The institution was renamed the Jean P. Haydon Museum in 1974 following a referendum approved by the Fono at the end of Governor Haydon’s appointment. The current exhibition offers visitors a chance to rediscover this rich history while celebrating American Samoa’s unique cultural heritage.
