Jamaican football coach Neville Bell says talented young players risk losing valuable scholarship opportunities when they fail to match their sporting ability with academic work and discipline.
Speaking on the No NDA Podcast, Bell described sports scholarships as an accessible pathway for talented young athletes but stressed that football ability alone is not enough.
He said coaches can work extensively to create opportunities for players, only for those opportunities to disappear when youngsters have not completed the academic requirements needed to qualify.
Bell suggested that some talented players mistakenly believe their ability on the field will automatically carry them through life.
He said coaches repeatedly encourage young athletes to take their schoolwork seriously, but some still fail to prepare adequately despite understanding what is at stake.
Bell linked the problem to wider challenges affecting Jamaican youngsters, noting that students arrive at school with different family circumstances, educational difficulties and personal struggles.
He said those differences make youth development particularly complex because there is no single solution capable of addressing every player’s circumstances.
For Bell, sporting talent can open significant doors, but young athletes must also develop the discipline necessary to take advantage of those opportunities.
