Bank of America Global Research analyst Matty Zhao said that neither the United States nor China can achieve dominance in artificial intelligence without relying on other countries, ahead of this week’s high‑stakes bilateral summit.
Zhao, who co‑heads China equity research at Bank of America, highlighted the deep interdependence of global technology supply chains. He noted that China’s strengths in power grids and manufacturing equipment are offset by its reliance on overseas suppliers for advanced chips, memory and certain high‑end materials.
In contrast, the United States faces different constraints. Zhao pointed out that the U.S. power grid averages 30 to 40 years old, compared with 15 to 20 years in China. He added that data centres across the country have sparked political and community opposition due to concerns about rising power costs.
These observations underscore the challenges both nations face in securing the infrastructure and components needed to lead the AI race, according to Zhao’s analysis.
