National Cleaning Day exposes mixed participation

**Kampala, Uganda – August 30, 2024** – Uganda’s second National Cleaning Day, held on Saturday, 29 August, revealed varied levels of public involvement across the country. The three‑hour clean‑up operation ran from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and was intended to mobilise residents, businesses and local authorities in a coordinated effort to clear litter and improve urban sanitation.

According to reports from *The Independent Uganda*, participation differed markedly between communities. In several neighbourhoods, residents voluntarily joined the initiative, organizing clean‑up teams and actively removing waste from streets and public spaces. In contrast, observers noted that in other areas security agencies and local officials had to intervene to ensure compliance, compelling some residents and businesses to take part in the exercise.

The mixed response highlights ongoing challenges in fostering consistent community engagement for nationwide environmental campaigns. Authorities have not yet released official figures on the total amount of waste collected or the number of participants involved. Further details on the outcomes of the clean‑up and any follow‑up actions are expected from the Ministry of Water and Environment in subsequent statements.
