Mystery at Sea: Australian and French Sailors Found Dead on Yacht
Two veteran sailors — 67-year-old Australian Deirdre Sibly and French national Pascal Mahe — were discovered dead aboard their yacht Acteon during a voyage from Réunion Island to Durban, South Africa. The pair, both highly experienced mariners, were sailing through the waters between Madagascar and Mozambique when tragedy struck.
A distress alert was issued from the vessel on November 27, prompting a nearby cargo ship in the Mozambique Channel to attempt a rescue. The crew was unable to board at the time, and two additional ships arrived the following morning. When rescuers finally managed to access the 50-foot yacht, they found both sailors deceased.
Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed the deaths and stated that authorities are still determining what happened.
Although some online commentators have suggested piracy — given the Mozambique Channel’s history of attacks on yachts — officials have not linked the incident to criminal activity. Australian authorities also noted they are providing support to other families dealing with unrelated events in the region.
