MV Barima Death Toll Hits 72 as Recovery Teams Battle Harsh Atlantic Conditions

The death toll from Saturday night’s capsizing of the MV Barima off the Essequibo Coast has climbed to 72, as recovery teams continue to battle harsh Atlantic conditions in a desperate effort to reposition the sunken vessel.

Authorities have so far identified 65 bodies, with more than 30 people still unaccounted for. The rising number of confirmed fatalities has underscored the scale of one of Guyana’s worst maritime tragedies in recent memory.

Recovery operations have been hampered by rough seas and strong currents, which have slowed efforts to access the wreckage. Teams are working to reposition the vessel to allow for a more thorough search and recovery of any remaining victims.

The MV Barima capsized late Saturday night, catching passengers and crew unaware. Officials have not yet released details on the cause of the disaster, but investigations are ongoing. The tragedy has sent shockwaves through coastal communities, where many families are still awaiting news of their loved ones.

As the search continues, authorities have urged the public to remain patient while recovery teams risk their own safety to bring closure to grieving families.
