MV Barima Captain Blames Faulty Vessel for Tragedy Amidst Legal Proceedings

Kevin Price, the captain of the ill-fated MV Barima, is facing serious charges after a tragic accident led to 72 deaths. As he was escorted into the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court, Price took the opportunity to criticize the vessel’s condition, highlighting its lack of essential safety equipment. He lamented the absence of a radar and a search and rescue transponder, which he argued made emergency responses nearly impossible.

Price, visibly emotional, described the 87-year-old ship as outdated and inadequately maintained. He pointed out that the life rafts on board had expired in 2022, questioning why maritime inspections had not addressed these issues. “Everybody knows it’s an old vessel the government gave me to work,” he stated.

Dexter Todd, Price’s attorney, expressed concerns about the judicial process, stating that the police had prematurely concluded their investigation. Todd argued for early disclosure of evidence, scheduled for August 3, to allow for a fair trial. The case has been transferred to the Charity Magistrate’s Court, where Todd plans to present preliminary legal arguments.

Todd emphasized the principle of sub judice, which restricts the Commission of Inquiry from interfering with ongoing court matters. He criticized the commission’s inability to investigate further due to this legal principle. Todd also raised practical concerns about the investigation, such as how authorities plan to determine the vessel’s weight without further inquiry.
