Mozambican President Daniel Chapo has reiterated his government’s openness to dialogue with Portuguese energy company Galp regarding a tax dispute, even as the firm pursues international arbitration.
Speaking in Lisbon at the conclusion of his official visit to Portugal, Chapo responded to journalists’ questions about Galp’s recourse to the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). He stated that Mozambique respects the company’s right to turn to international bodies but believes dialogue remains the best avenue to resolve the conflict.
The dispute centers on tax issues between the Mozambican state and Galp, a key investor in the country’s natural gas sector. Chapo’s comments signal a willingness to negotiate without undermining legal processes.
Observers note that the outcome could affect investor confidence in Mozambique’s energy sector. The government has not provided further details on the tax disagreement.
