Mother Calls for Justice a Year After Daughter’s Mysterious Pool Death

On the one-year anniversary of the tragic death of 11-year-old Adriana Young, her mother, Amicia Simon, is renewing calls for justice. Adriana’s body was discovered in a hotel pool on April 24, 2025, a day after she went missing while staying at the Doubleday Hotel with family members. The incident has become a focal point for discussions on child safety and police response in Guyana.

The official post mortem examination conducted by international pathologists determined that Adriana’s cause of death was drowning. However, Simon has challenged these findings, insisting that her daughter’s death was not accidental. In a statement, she expressed doubt that Adriana drowned in the hotel pool, citing the presence of other guests at the time and emphasizing the improbability of an unnoticed incident occurring.

A significant development in the case came with the announcement from the Ghana Police Force that an inquest has been ordered. The Director of Public Prosecutions advised this move to further investigate the circumstances surrounding Adriana’s death. Simon welcomed the inquest as a positive step but expressed a desire for state officials to communicate directly with her family about the proceedings.

Adriana’s death has sparked nationwide protests and ignited public demand for better law enforcement and legislative changes regarding the handling of missing children cases. Amica Lewis, Adriana’s aunt, underscored the importance of reform, advocating for swift police action when children go missing. She pointed to the need for more stringent legislative measures to ensure that law enforcement treats such incidents with the urgency they deserve.

The case remains a sensitive topic within the community as questions linger around the events leading to Adriana’s death. Many are hopeful that the inquest will provide clarity and potentially hold accountable those involved. In the meantime, Adriana’s family continues to seek closure and justice, maintaining that her death demands a full accounting to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
