‘Monarchy could end anarchy’: Monarchist leader calls for return of king in France

Frédéric de Natal, leader of the International Monarchist Conference (IMC), has sparked debate by claiming that restoring the monarchy could end what he calls growing ‘anarchy’ in France. In an interview, de Natal argued that ‘monarchy embodies tradition, continuity, and the great history of our country,’ adding that ‘a king is an arbiter, something currently missing in France.’

De Natal, one of the few French journalists working on monarchist news, said the IMC is not a political party but a coordinating structure for global monarchist movements, founded in 2008. The group has held demonstrations in support of imprisoned monarchists, such as in Iran, and now focuses on disseminating news about monarchist activities worldwide.

When asked about his personal conviction, de Natal recounted becoming convinced at age 14 that monarchy was the only legitimate government for France, a belief that has never left him. He also discussed the recent death of the Count of Paris in January, noting that it generated over 50 articles in French and foreign media, a sign of enduring interest in the royal family.

De Natal praised Prince Jean of Orleans, the new head of the House of Orleans, as a charismatic figure reminiscent of his grandfather, Henri of Orleans. He suggested that the prince may develop a political project that could surprise the French public. The Orleans family remains the most popular aristocratic house in France, according to de Natal, due to its direct lineage from the last French king and its active media presence.
