Mohamed detained as police investigate alleged payment for surveillance footage.

Guyana’s Opposition Leader, Azruddin Mohamed, was arrested on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, as police investigate allegations that he paid a police constable GY$800,000 to obtain confidential surveillance footage from the country’s Safe Country System.

Crime Chief and Deputy Commissioner Wendell Blanhum confirmed the arrest to Guyana’s News Room, reporting that Mohamed was detained at Eccles, East Bank Demerara, for questioning.

The investigation centres on surveillance footage connected to an October 12 shooting incident outside the residence of Senior Superintendent Prem Narine, head of the Guyana Police Force’s Special Branch.

According to police, a constable attached to the Force’s Command Centre allegedly obtained the recordings and supplied them in exchange for money.

The constable was also arrested as investigators examined how the footage was obtained and subsequently released.

On Monday, October 26, Mohamed publicly presented surveillance recordings during a press conference to support his account of what he described as an assassination attempt against him.

Police have disputed aspects of Mohamed’s account of the October 12 incident, which resulted in criminal charges against the Opposition Leader and two associates. All three were subsequently granted bail.

Attorney General Anil Nandlall warned on Tuesday night that the alleged payment could result in additional criminal charges.

On Tuesday, investigators also visited Mohamed’s residence and requested that he report to the Criminal Investigation Department headquarters for questioning about the alleged corrupt transaction.

The investigation into the surveillance footage is separate from the existing criminal proceedings arising from the October 12 incident.

The bribery allegations remain under investigation and have not been established in court.
