On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi received Brazil’s highest civilian honor, the Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross, from President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. This award acknowledges PM Modi’s efforts in enhancing India-Brazil relations and cooperation on global platforms. This honor marks the 26th international accolade for Modi since he took office in May 2014, and the third received during his current five-nation tour, which began on July 2.
In his speech, PM Modi expressed gratitude to President Lula for the warm reception in Rio and Brasilia, stating that the award is a point of pride for all Indians. He emphasized the importance of the India-Brazil strategic partnership, highlighting their goal to increase bilateral trade to $20 billion within five years. Modi also remarked on the cultural connections between the two nations, likening Brazil’s passion for football to India’s love for cricket, suggesting that achieving a $20 billion partnership is well within reach.
During his visit, PM Modi received a grand welcome at the Alvorada Palace, which featured a unique 114-horse procession and an Indian classical music performance. The visit is significant as it marks the first bilateral trip to Brazil by an Indian prime minister in nearly sixty years. Additionally, India and Brazil signed multiple memoranda of understanding during this visit, further solidifying their cooperation.
