**Zimbabwe Court Hears Bail Arguments for President’s Daughter‑in‑Law Over Alleged Fake Identity Document**

Harare – Kelsea Tafirenyika, the daughter‑in‑law of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, appeared before a Harare magistrate on Thursday to seek bail after being charged with possession of a purportedly falsified identity document. The court hearing, presided over by Magistrate Francis Mapfumo, is expected to conclude on 1 September, when a decision on her release will be announced.

**Legal arguments**

Tafirenyika’s legal team, comprising advocates Admire Rubaya, Everson Chatambudza, Malvern Mapako and Kangai, argued that the identity card allegedly issued in the name of Gertrude Baeza could have been fabricated using artificial‑intelligence (AI) technology. The defence maintains that the document is not genuine, but that its creation may involve modern digital tools rather than traditional forgery methods.

**Charges**

In addition to the alleged fake ID, Tafirenyika faces a separate charge under the Civil Registry Act. The State, represented by investigating officer Gift Machipisa, opposed bail, describing the defendant as a flight risk. Machipisa alleged that Tafirenyika owns more than 13 properties outside Zimbabwe, primarily in South Africa and the United Arab Emirates, and said that Interpol had been approached to assist in tracing those assets.

The State further alleges that Tafirenyika acquired property valued at approximately US$9 million through proceeds of drug‑related activities, a claim she denies. In her bail application, Tafirenyika asserted that the properties identified by police were gifts from her husband, Collins Takunda Mnangagwa, and that his business interests enabled him to “spoil” her.

**Background**

Tafirenyika was previously detained on money‑laundering allegations. She was released from remand prison earlier in the week, only to be re‑arrested shortly thereafter on the new charge of possessing a falsified identity document. She has claimed that her arrest is politically motivated, suggesting that opponents of the First Family are behind the proceedings.

**Next steps**

The magistrate’s decision on bail will be delivered on 1 September. If bail is denied, Tafirenyika will remain in custody pending further court proceedings. The case continues to draw public attention due to the high‑profile nature of the defendant and the allegations of potential misuse of AI in document forgery.
