Minister, Security Team Stay Until Eddie Hart Police Post Completed

Minister of Rural Development and Local Government Khadijah Ameen says she, officials from the Ministry of Homeland Security, Municipal Police officers and residents remained at the Eddie Hart site until work on the proposed police post was completed.

Speaking after a community gathering on Friday, Ameen said the group stayed at the location until construction activities for the day had concluded. She also said no official stop notice had been served.

According to Ameen, the Chairman of the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation arrived with a document which he said was a notice related to the project. Ameen questioned whether a political office-holder has the authority to issue such a notice and described the situation as unusual.

Ameen said the proposed police post has received support from residents, vendors and members of surrounding communities, many of whom believe an increased police presence would help improve safety. She cited previous robberies and a murder in the area, as well as the number of people who regularly use the location, including early-morning joggers and market patrons.

“We want to make the place safer,” she said, adding that she hopes the project remains focused on improving public safety.

The minister also said she has received messages of support from people across the country, including officials from other municipal corporations who have expressed interest in similar police posts for their communities.

Ameen commended Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar for promoting the establishment of police posts across Trinidad and Tobago and said her ministry remains committed to working with the Ministry of Homeland Security on community safety initiatives.

The proposed Eddie Hart Police Post has become the subject of public discussion, with the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation maintaining that planning and development laws should be followed before construction proceeds, while Government officials have argued that the facility is intended to enhance security in the area.
