Minister Maria Browne Pledges Massive Upsurge in Roadworks Across Antigua

In a significant announcement, Works Minister Maria Browne has committed to accelerating road infrastructure development across Antigua and Barbuda by twentyfold under a new Antigua Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) administration. This ambitious plan comes as part of a broader strategy to address critical infrastructural deficits affecting the nation.

During a recent appearance on ABS’s ‘Know Your Candidates’, Browne highlighted the setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which had previously slowed progress. However, she assured that with new plans in place, residents could expect to see tangible improvements in the coming months. She detailed that the focus would not only be on expanding road networks but also on addressing longstanding drainage issues and replacing antiquated water pipelines. This, she noted, was crucial for sustainable infrastructure growth.

The Minister elaborated on ongoing coordination with the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) to carry out these essential upgrades. Browne explained that while preparations such as casting of culverts had been made by Public Works, final installations were awaiting the completion of re-piping efforts by APUA. This joint approach signifies a more integrated plan to overhaul the nation’s infrastructure, ensuring roads are more resilient and efficient.

Furthermore, Browne spoke about the socio-economic impact of these projects, pointing to a reduction in unemployment rates from approximately 37% in 2018 to about 7% today, thanks to targeted job placement initiatives. She also cited several community empowerment programs, including home repairs and scholarships for youth, which have uplifted many households in her constituency.

Looking forward, the Minister expressed optimism regarding a proposed $100 million loan facility intended to finance these infrastructural expansions. She assured that once the funds are available, there will be a substantial upsurge in work activity across the nation.

Browne’s announcement underscores her party’s commitment to advancing local infrastructure significantly and addressing critical needs in road maintenance and community development. With general elections on the horizon, the proposal serves as a cornerstone for the ABLP’s campaign, reflecting a vision of enhanced public utilities and improved living conditions for the citizens of Antigua and Barbuda.
