Minister of Fisheries, Marine Conservation, and Climate Resilience, Conroy Sayers Huggins, has spotlighted the tangible impacts of climate change on St. Vincent and the Grenadines during a climate adaptation workshop. Speaking at the event on Tuesday, Minister Huggins emphasized the country’s urgent need to implement effective climate strategies, particularly noting that approximately 90% of its critical infrastructure is located along vulnerable coastal areas.
According to Minister Huggins, the impacts of climate change are not an abstract issue but a real and immediate threat. Coastal erosion, rising sea levels, and severe weather events are posing significant risks to the nation’s infrastructure and economy. The climate adaptation workshop, supported by CARICOM and the Green Climate Fund, was designed to bolster the National Adaptation Plan and sector-specific responses.
The workshop outlined practical pathways for achieving resilience against climate adversities and underscored the importance of cross-government collaboration. Minister Huggins called for coordinated efforts across all government sectors to translate plans into actionable strategies. He noted that climate adaptation must transcend policy language, advocating for visibility in planning, regulation, investment, and ecosystem management.
The workshop participants were guided through comprehensive planning sessions that focused on addressing the gaps in institutional, technical, financial, and policy areas that currently hinder adaptation processes. The initiatives aim to create a resilient framework that not only identifies vulnerabilities but actively works towards sustainable development outcomes.
In addition to government efforts, private sector and community involvement were highlighted as essential components for successful climate adaptation. Minister Huggins stressed that a shared understanding among all stakeholders is crucial to ensure the full implementation of climate strategies. The views echoed the workshop’s overall message of urgency and collective responsibility in securing the nation’s environmental and economic future.
