Ameen Praises Cleanup Crews Following Independence Day Celebrations

Minister Khadijah Ameen has praised public-sector workers and government agencies involved in cleanup operations following Trinidad and Tobago’s Independence Day celebrations.

The operation targeted major areas used for the festivities, including the Queen’s Park Savannah and areas around the Queen’s Park Oval, where crews worked to clear waste and restore public spaces following the large gatherings.

Ameen commended workers attached to the National Public Utility and Public Services (NPUPS), saying she observed a strong level of coordination and discipline during the exercise.

She said several government entities were involved in the wider effort, with agencies working together to ensure areas used for Independence activities were cleaned and returned to normal as quickly as possible.

Ameen described the cooperation among workers and ministries as an example of the approach the Government wants to encourage across the public service.

The minister also highlighted another major change to this year’s Independence celebrations — the use of a drone light show rather than traditional fireworks.

The move significantly reduced the explosive noise normally associated with fireworks displays, with Ameen pointing to the potential benefits for people sensitive to loud sounds, senior citizens, animals and pet owners.

She described the change as a step towards celebrations that remain visually impressive while being more considerate of their impact on surrounding communities.

The shift towards drone displays formed part of the Government’s approach to the 2026 Independence celebrations under Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

Ameen said the combination of coordinated public-sector operations and changes to traditional celebrations represented what she viewed as a broader cultural shift in how national events are organised.

Trinidad and Tobago celebrated its 64th anniversary of Independence on August 31, with activities taking place across the country.
