Jaguar is preparing for a significant brand transformation, with the company set to unveil its new Type 01 model in New York this October. Described by the manufacturer as the most important launch in its history, the vehicle is a fully electric luxury GT measuring over five meters in length. The launch marks a strategic shift for the British brand as it moves away from the premium segment to compete directly in the luxury market.
Jaguar CEO Rawdon Glover stated that the company’s decision to pivot toward a higher price point and lower volume is a calculated move to ensure long-term sustainability. According to Glover, remaining in the premium segment, which he described as intensely competitive and commercially difficult, presented a greater risk than moving upmarket. He noted that the company’s success with high-end models under the JLR umbrella, such as the Range Rover and Defender, supports this new direction.
The brand’s recent marketing efforts, which included a controversial promotional video, generated significant global attention. Glover acknowledged the scale of the public reaction but clarified that the video was not intended to be a social commentary. He explained that the campaign was designed to re-establish Jaguar’s presence in the public consciousness after a period of declining visibility and sales. He estimated that the campaign reached two billion potential impressions, providing a platform for the upcoming product launch.
Addressing concerns regarding the financial risks of the transition, Glover emphasized that the company is drawing inspiration from its history, specifically the 1960s and 1970s, when Jaguar focused on a smaller range of high-value vehicles. He argued that by focusing on original design and luxury performance rather than competing on volume, the company is following a path that minimizes risk in a volatile global automotive market.
The upcoming Type 01 is intended to represent a departure from the brand’s output over the last 30 years. Glover stated that the vehicle aims to offer a balance of luxury, handling, and performance, positioning it against established luxury manufacturers. Following the initial concept phase, Jaguar plans to transition its marketing toward more traditional promotional content that highlights the vehicle’s design and the engineering work conducted at the company’s headquarters in Gaydon, England.
