Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of the Law and Justice party (PiS), delivered a speech in the town of Krynica on Thursday. In the address, he warned that if PiS were to return to power, Poland might have to initiate the process of leaving the European Union if the EU does not adopt reforms that align with the party’s agenda. Kaczyński said, “If the Union does not change in the direction that my party desires, we will have to start the exit procedure.” He added that the method would be “hard, risky, but it is truly so bad, so very bad, that it is worth applying such a method if other measures do not yield results.” The speech came after the “polexit” debate had largely faded from public discourse. Kaczyński’s remarks have reignited discussions about Poland’s future relationship with the EU and the potential legal and political steps that would be required for an exit.
