A man reportedly suffering from mental health challenges sparked a chaotic scene in Penal on June 16, 2026, when he managed to outrun police officers after a confrontation. The incident began when officers responded to a call from Emergency Health Services for assistance at a bar on Clarke Street. On arrival, the man became confrontational and refused to cooperate with the police, leading to a tense standoff.
In an attempt to arrest him, the situation escalated further. The man allegedly resisted, lashing out violently and injuring an officer. Despite deploying a taser several times and employing approved restraint techniques, officers failed to subdue the suspect.
The confrontation took a dramatic turn when the suspect broke free and fled on foot, resulting in a chase through the streets of Penal. Despite the officers’ best efforts, the pursuit ended when the suspect managed to escape into a heavily wooded area near Don’s Pet Shop.
Following the incident, officers conducted an extensive search of the surrounding district but were unable to locate the suspect. Meanwhile, the injured officer was taken to the Siparia District Health Facility for treatment of his injuries. Police have identified the suspect, and efforts are ongoing to locate and arrest him.
