MelaCaribe has publicly shared the raw emotion of laying her mother, Gail Paterson-Edmund, to rest, revealing she asked God for the strength of a lion and asked her mother for the strength she possessed.
In an Instagram post, the entertainer said that strength carried her through the hardest day of her life. After the burial, she described a strange peace surrounding her, but within that peace an emptiness she cannot put into words. “Everything feels still,” she wrote. “Life is continuing around me, but something inside of me has gone quiet.”
MelaCaribe said her mother told her to sing like she had never sung before, and that is exactly what she did. Despite her heart breaking, she felt strongest while standing and singing for her mother. She believes it was her mother’s presence with her, and she could almost hear her voice above everyone else, saying the words she heard throughout her life: “That’s my child!”
She also credited her mother for always prioritizing her education and teaching her the power of words. According to MelaCaribe, her mother made sure she could think, write, speak and express herself with confidence. Even in saying goodbye, she was able to honor her mother with everything she poured into her. She added that they danced and celebrated her mother, ending the tribute with the phrase “Gone but NEVER FORGOTTEN Gail Paterson – Edmund” and calling her “My Guardian Angel.”
