Mayor Threatens Legal Action Over Street Takeover

The Georgetown Mayor and City Council are preparing legal action against the central government following its decision to take control of city streets and properties.

Mayor Alfred Mentore described the move as a “hostile takeover” and insisted that the municipality holds legal ownership of the affected assets. He confirmed that attorneys are preparing to challenge the reclassification of dozens of streets as public roads under state control.

The mayor also criticized the government for failing to consult the council, stating that the matter will be taken to court and potentially escalated to the Caribbean Court of Justice if necessary.

The dispute sets the stage for a major legal and political confrontation, with both sides standing firm on their positions regarding control of the capital city’s infrastructure.
