A man is now in police custody after a violent early-morning confrontation in Mayaro that left two officers injured. The incident began Sunday night at a local bar on Guayaguayare Road where the man and his wife were spending time. An argument broke out when the man allegedly took his wife’s cellphone without her permission. Fearful for her safety, the woman left the bar and secured her home before seeking refuge at a nearby apartment for the night.
At approximately 2:15 a.m., her fears materialized when she heard loud banging and shouting from her apartment. The man was reportedly outside, attempting to forcefully gain entry and issuing threats. The woman remained inside and contacted the police.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers found the man actively trying to break into the apartment. However, when they attempted to arrest him, the man resisted, injuring two officers in the process. This prompted a call for backup and the suspect was eventually subdued and taken into custody.
During a subsequent search, officers recovered the woman’s cellphone. One officer also reported that his personal cellphone was damaged during the altercation. Both officers who were initially attacked sought medical attention at the Mayaro District Hospital and were later discharged. Police continue to investigate this incident.
