Malta Braces for 41°C: Health Authorities Issue Urgent Heatwave Warning

Malta is set to sizzle as temperatures are forecast to hit a blistering 41°C on Monday, according to the Malta Meteorological Office. The mercury will climb steadily from 38°C today, reaching 39°C tomorrow and 40°C on Sunday, before peaking on Monday. The ‘feels like’ temperature will jump to 41°C from Saturday, offering little relief until Wednesday when it ‘drops’ to 36°C.

In response, the Health Authorities have escalated the Heat Health Action Plan, activating cooling centres across various localities to support vulnerable individuals without adequate cooling at home. The public is urged to take precautions: avoid sun exposure between 11am and 4pm, drink plenty of water, wear light clothing, and never leave anyone in a parked vehicle.

High temperatures can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, or heatstroke. Symptoms of heatstroke include high body temperature, confusion, dizziness, seizures, and loss of consciousness – a medical emergency requiring an immediate call to 112. Vulnerable groups include the elderly over 75, babies, young children, those with chronic conditions, and outdoor workers.

The Health Authorities also advise checking on elderly relatives and neighbours living alone. For more information, follow HPDPMalta on Facebook or visit beattheheat.gov.mt.
