Madagascar has recorded a slight improvement in the fight against chronic malnutrition, with the national rate falling from 39% in 2021 to 37% in 2025. The figures were presented by Fanja Rakotondrainibe, national coordinator of the National Nutrition Office (ONN), during the inauguration of its new headquarters in Nanisana, funded by the World Bank.
While the reduction reflects ongoing efforts, the situation remains critical. Nearly one in three children under five still suffer from acute malnutrition, with the southern and southeastern regions most affected. Even parts of Antananarivo and the north face worrying levels.
Prime Minister Mamitiana Rajaonarison reiterated that fighting malnutrition is a government priority and announced plans to increase the ONN budget. He stressed that poverty is a key driver and called for a multisectoral approach involving health, agriculture, education, and social protection.
Rajaonarison also expressed concern over heavy reliance on external funding. He proposed creating a ‘Basket Fund’ to pool contributions from citizens, businesses, and national stakeholders to sustainably finance nutrition programs.
