Malaysia Airlines to Europe: Pack Light – No Suitcases Allowed Due to Wind and Safety

Imagine boarding a long-haul flight only to be told you cannot bring a suitcase. That is exactly what Malaysia Airlines passengers flying from Kuala Lumpur to Amsterdam or Paris are facing this month. The airline says strong headwinds, made worse by a longer flight path avoiding Ukraine following the MH17 downing, prevents fully loaded planes from completing the journey.

From now until the end of January 2016, only one carry-on bag is allowed – 7 kg in economy, 14 kg for business and first class. Any checked luggage will be delayed and sent on a later flight. The route itself is also being axed, leaving London as Malaysia Airlines’ sole European destination.

The airline has been reeling from the twin disasters of MH17 and MH370, and is now shrinking its long-haul operations to focus on regional routes in Southeast Asia. Travelers to Amsterdam and Paris are advised to pack extremely light or prepare to be reunited with their bags days later.
