Major Cargo Heist: Over 400,000 KitKat Bars Stolen in Europe

In what is being described as a major cargo heist, authorities in Europe are investigating the theft of over 400,000 KitKat chocolate bars. The hefty shipment, produced by Nestlé, was en route from a factory in central Italy to Poland when the crime occurred. The missing cargo, weighing an estimated 12 tonnes, remains unaccounted for, along with the delivery truck. Investigations are under way, with authorities and logistics partners banding together to trace the stolen goods.

The exact count of stolen KitKat bars is 413,793, each carrying a unique batch number for traceability. Nestlé has urged the public to report any encounter with these items. A Nestlé spokesperson acknowledged the unusual nature of the theft, jokingly remarking on the thieves’ ‘exceptional taste’, while stressing the growing issue of cargo theft across Europe.

Industry bodies such as the International Union of Marine Insurance and the Transported Asset Protection Association have reported an uptick in cargo theft and freight fraud. They note that criminal operations are becoming increasingly organized and sophisticated.

Despite the vast scale of the incident, Nestlé has reassured consumers that there are no safety concerns and the theft will not impact product availability. This case echoes a similar confectionery-related crime in 2023, where a man was jailed for stealing 200,000 chocolate eggs.
