French President Emmanuel Macron has responded to a social media post by United States President Donald Trump that depicted the French archipelago of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon as American territory. The image, which appeared to be AI-generated, showed the United States flag covering a large portion of the Western Hemisphere, including Canada, Mexico, Greenland, Central America, the Caribbean, and Iceland.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday during a visit to Saint-Pierre, Macron addressed the map, stating it was obvious that the archipelago remains French territory. He added that he would not address the matter repeatedly, noting that some individuals express strange ideas.
The incident follows a period of diplomatic tension between the two nations. In July, the French mission to the United Nations criticized the United States for voting against the extension of the mandate for UN human rights chief Volker Turk. The mission stated that the U.S. no longer served as a beacon for human rights, leading to a delay in Washington’s approval of Aurelien Lechevallier as the new French ambassador to the United States.
Since returning to office in 2025, President Trump has made several controversial territorial claims and suggestions, including proposals regarding Greenland, Canada, the Panama Canal, and the Gaza Strip. Last week, the United States, Denmark, and Greenland announced an agreement that Trump stated would grant Washington permanent control over the security of the Arctic territory.
