Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been re‑elected for a fourth term after winning the second round of the presidential election with 51.75 % of the vote, according to official results. His main opponent, former President Flávio Bolsonaro, received 48.25 % of the ballots. Lula, who turns 81 on Tuesday, secured the victory in a closely contested race that saw him return to the presidency for the first time since 2006. He first won the office in 2002 and previously served two consecutive terms from 2003 to 2010. The result was announced by Brazil’s electoral court, which confirmed that Lula had won the runoff and will serve a new term beginning in the coming months.
