On 8 November 2026, Hon. Pennelope Beckles, Leader of the Opposition, sent a heartfelt Shubh Divali greeting to Trinidad and Tobago’s Hindu community. Her message celebrated the festival’s spiritual importance and the nation’s shared values.
Divali, the festival of lights, is a season of devotion, prayer, fasting, and reflection. Families light diyas and pray to Mother Lakshmi for peace, prosperity and abundance, reminding all that light will triumph over darkness.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of Divali’s recognition as a public holiday in 1966, a decision championed by the country’s first Prime Minister, Dr. Eric Williams. The move affirmed the Hindu community’s vital place in Trinidad and Tobago’s national story.
Beckles urged citizens to honor each other’s faiths and cultures, to share in celebrations, and to build a society where every belief is respected. She reminded that many families face unseen burdens and called for collective compassion.
In closing, the Leader of the Opposition reaffirmed her commitment to a peaceful, inclusive and united nation. She wished all families peace, prosperity and joy as the light of Divali strengthens hope for Trinidad and Tobago’s future.
