Le golf tahitien se teste avant les Jeux du Pacifique 2027

The inaugural Pacific Golf Cup is scheduled to take place from September 23 to 27 at the Golf de Tahiti in Atimaono. The event serves as both an international competition to strengthen regional ties and a practical trial for the organization and sporting format intended for the 2027 Pacific Games.

Four international delegations from the Cook Islands, Samoa, Fiji, and Aotearoa are expected to participate. Organizers anticipate approximately 32 international players and eight support staff members. The Tahitian federation will be represented by 18 players divided into three teams. While the event has a maximum capacity of 88 participants, 50 players are currently registered.

The tournament format includes three days of individual stroke-play over 54 holes, followed by two days of team match-play finals. A practice day for the course is scheduled for Tuesday. The competition provides an opportunity for the Polynesian federation to evaluate the 18-hole Atimaono course, which is currently undergoing renovations, and to provide feedback to the Pacific Games Organizing Committee and the Pacific Games Council regarding team event structures.

Charles Almeida, a technical executive for the federation, noted that the current format lacks a provision for substitute players, a feature common in international competitions. He also cited institutional challenges, noting that opposition from New Caledonia during an August commission meeting has complicated the planning process. Approximately 30 volunteers and referees are expected to support the event, with 25 already mobilized by the Polynesian federation.

Iotua Lenoir of Tahiti Tourisme highlighted the potential for golf to attract international visitors, particularly from the American market. The Tahitian delegation includes a mix of experienced players and junior athletes, with the federation aiming to establish the Pacific Golf Cup as a recurring event. Discussions are underway with the New Zealand Māori Golf Association regarding a potential partnership and a second edition of the tournament in New Zealand in 2028.
