Prishtina, 6 November – The Prishtina municipality announced that it has reached an agreement with the union of striking cleaning staff, and regular maintenance work is expected to resume during the coming week. The Education Directorate confirmed that the first instalment of wages for the technical workers has been paid, with the remaining balance to be completed by Tuesday. Under the new arrangement, the Public Housing Company (Banesore) and the cleaning firm “Pastrimi” will provide cleaning and maintenance services until the technical staff return. The Education Directorate will coordinate and supervise the work. Arianit Elshani, director of education in Prishtina, told parents that the health and well‑being of students are the top priority and that adequate hygienic conditions are essential for effective learning. He described the strike as a “misaddressed strike” and stressed that the safety of children cannot be compromised. The strike, which has lasted seven weeks, has reportedly worsened hygiene conditions in city schools. At the primary and lower secondary “Mehmet Gjevori” school, heating was shut off a day earlier, and classes were held without heating despite the principal’s request for intervention. Parents at the “Ismail Qemali” school have decided to boycott Friday’s lessons, citing that the agreement does not guarantee immediate cleaning and referencing reported allergic reactions among children. Parents of “Mehmet Gjevori” have also voted to boycott Friday’s classes because of the lack of hygiene and heating. The Education Directorate reiterated its intention for the teaching process to continue normally, but emphasized that the health and safety of students remain the foremost concern.
