A truck fire broke out in the Atalay Coşkunoğlu Tunnel on the Northern Marmara Motorway in Kocaeli at approximately 20:30 on Thursday. The vehicle was traveling toward Ankara when the blaze started. Firefighters arrived quickly and extinguished the fire. Because the cargo in the truck could have been a hazardous chemical, AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Authority) was also dispatched to the scene. An inspection later confirmed that the material was not chemical. The tunnel was closed to traffic while the fire was being controlled, causing a traffic jam on the motorway. After the truck was removed from the road, the tunnel was reopened and normal traffic resumed. An investigation into the incident has been launched.
