Weapons, Knives and Toy Guns Seized During School Search in Guyana

Authorities in Guyana have confiscated a large number of prohibited items during a security search at a secondary school, raising renewed concerns about student safety and discipline within the education system.

Items displayed by authorities included several knives, pairs of scissors, screwdrivers and what appeared to be imitation firearms. The objects were reportedly discovered during a routine search of students’ bags conducted by police officers in collaboration with school administrators and welfare officers.

According to reports from Guyanese media, similar operations have been carried out in several schools as part of efforts to curb violence and antisocial behaviour among students. During these exercises, officers discovered weapons such as knives, scissors, screwdrivers and even a toy gun in students’ possession.

Authorities said the searches are aimed at preventing incidents of violence and ensuring that schools remain safe learning environments. The bag checks are usually conducted in the presence of school principals and welfare officers to ensure proper procedures are followed.

In addition to the searches, officers often hold discussions with students about the dangers and legal consequences of bringing weapons onto school compounds. Topics such as school violence, gang conflicts and respect for teachers are also addressed during these sessions.

Education officials in Guyana have previously warned that there has been an increase in violent incidents among students, prompting stronger security measures in schools.

The discovery of the weapons has sparked debate among parents and educators about the growing challenges facing schools in maintaining discipline and protecting students.

Authorities say they will continue conducting similar operations across schools to deter students from bringing dangerous items onto school compounds.
