Kaffi Flauel er nýtt kaffihús í Árbæ

New neighborhood café opens in Selás Kaffi Flauel, a new café located in the Selás neighborhood of Árbær, officially opened its doors on August 8, 2026. The establishment was founded by Karen Olga Ársælsdóttir, who sought to create a local gathering place for residents. Karen, who moved to the Árbær area in 2014 after living in Denmark, stated that she had long identified a need for a communal space where neighbors, parents, and local students could meet without having to travel far. “I saw that there was a lack of a meeting place for people, especially those who know each other from other contexts,” she said. The café serves coffee, pastries, and light evening refreshments. According to Karen, the menu has evolved based on customer feedback, with popular offerings now including sandwiches, platters, pretzels, and beer. Future plans for the venue include hosting events such as knitting circles, bread-platter evenings, and presentations on fermented beverages. The café features seating for 30 guests indoors and eight outdoors, with additional space in a garden area behind the building. The business is operated by Karen alongside her daughter and manager Kristín, who oversees kitchen operations. Reflecting on the community response, Karen noted that the café has been well-received by local groups, including mothers’ groups, swimming clubs, and school staff. “People tell me how much they appreciate the initiative and that they intend to look after the place,” she said. “People feel like they own a part of it. This is our place.”
