Joint Security Exercise Conducted at Port-of-Spain Remand Facility

In a bid to fortify security arrangements, a joint exercise was conducted at the Port-of-Spain Remand Facility on Thursday afternoon. The operation was spearheaded by officers from the Guard and Emergency Branch (GEB), in collaboration with the Port-of-Spain Division and prison staff. Their mission was to hunt for unauthorised items among the facilities’ inmates.

The searches commenced just after midday, although at the time of reporting, it remained unclear whether any contraband had been discovered. It is important to note, the police emphasise, that such exercises are not out of the ordinary but are instead routine happenings at prisons across the nation.

During the operation, GEB officers, donned in riot suppression gear, were spotted riding in the tray of a covered flatbed truck along New Street, adjacent to the prison compound. In addition, heavily armed police and prison officers were on the scene, setting up temporary barricades that blocked civilian traffic at the street corner.

Adding to the day’s activities, a senior prison officer was reported to have arrived at the facility for a meeting during the exercise, further underlining the seriousness of the operation.
