John-Bates Resigns: Denies Wrongdoing, Pledges Continued Service to Trinidad and Tobago

Former Opposition Senator Janelle John-Bates recently announced her resignation from the Senate. Contrary to some interpretations, she was clear that her resignation was not an admission of any wrongdoing. The decision, she explained, was made in an attempt to uphold the integrity of Parliament and to prevent any distractions from the Opposition’s work.

John-Bates expressed her gratitude towards Opposition Leader Penelope Beckles-Robinson for the opportunity to serve the country. She described her time in Parliament as a source of pride and accomplishment. She also extended her thanks to her husband, family, friends, and supporters, whose encouragement and prayers supported her through a challenging period.

John-Bates emphasized that public office requires accountability, humility, and reflection, and that the institution itself must always take precedence over the individual who holds the office. ‘The office must always be greater than the office holder, and the public interest must always come first,’ she asserted.

While addressing her resignation, she categorically denied any attempts to interfere with witnesses, obstruct inquiries, or mislead Parliament. Her decision to step down, she claimed, was a reflection of her respect for Parliament as an institution and her desire to ensure unhindered progress of the Opposition’s work.

Despite her resignation, John-Bates reaffirmed her commitment to Trinidad and Tobago. She stated her willingness to serve the nation in whatever capacity she may be called upon in the future.
